How You Can Help Yourself To Overcome Health Anxiety.

A light degree of Health Anxiety also known as hypochondria is common among many people. In fact we all at times have experienced it. Remember the time when someone mentioned having been bitten by some biting insect that were around and all of a sudden you started to feel itchy. Or how about the time when you really did not feel like doing something and all of a sudden you developed a pain somewhere. However health anxiety can and does become a serious problem for some.

If you feel very worried about your health most of the time and if you start to experience the symptoms illness when you are reading or have read about it you may well be suffering from chronic health anxiety. If you go to the doctor with true symptoms on a regular basis but there is never anything showing on tests you can be pretty sure you have it. Unless of course you have an illness that has not yet been recognized by the medical profession. Basically health anxiety is a mental disorder with physical symptoms which can come in varying degrees of severity.

So what can you do about it? There are official avenues you can explore such as psychotherapy, medication, a supportive medical doctor or a specialized therapist. On the other hand you can do a lot of health anxiety self help. After all it is all about beliefs and you can change your beliefs. Having a supportive friend or family is a big help as they can keep reminding you to choose your beliefs and not to get carried away by your worries.

Unfortunately there are some people who are so severely affected by hypochondria, or health anxiety, that they find it hard to believe that they are not suffering from a physical illness, even though they have physical symptoms, but from a mental disorder. If you are a family member of someone like that you can help them by offering some inspirational new ways of looking at life without focusing on the health anxiety itself.
