Using affirmations for improving self esteem is a potent way to build your self esteem and if you do it right it is fun. By telling yourself positive uplifting things you will train your brain to change stuck or undermining thinking patterns into ones that help with building confidence and self esteem.
So how do you use self esteem affirmations the right way? There are plenty of people who try affirmations just to find that they do not work for them. Why? Because they do not go about it the right way. Let’s discuss not only how to construct your improving self esteem affirmations but also a few other key points to getting your self esteem affirmation exercise to be super successful for you.
It is a pity not many more people are aware of how they can help themselves with this simple yet powerful free affirmation exercise. Okay so let’s get started.
Improving Self Esteem Through Self Esteem Affirmations Step 1: Select A Role Model
Instead of writing just anything down that comes to mind for your self esteem affirmations you will be much more effective if you choose a role model. Is there someone who you feel has the self esteem that you would like to have for yourself? It does not matter if they are still alive or not as long as you know a bit about them.
By choosing someone, or more than one if you like, you and your brain will get a better picture of what it is like to be confident. Base your self esteem affirmations on how your chosen role model(s) behaves. It is so much more effective if you chose a self esteem role model to work with than if you do not. Often when people don’t have a role model to give them a good sense of what having self esteem looks like they do not succeed in making affirmations work for them.
By using affirmations we seek to make our subconscious mind believe that what we keep affirming is true. When your subconscious believes it the rest of you will be successful in feeling and believing it also. And then you will in fact be self confident.
When speaking to your subconscious by way of the self esteem affirmations it is necessary to be specific and use concrete things that a person with great self esteem does. For instance being at ease speaking to complete strangers, to someone you are attracted to, or being able to stand up for yourself.
With your role model(s) in mind write down actions you think would be what they would do easily because they are confident of themselves.
Improving Self Esteem Through Self Esteem Affirmations Step 2: Constructing Your Affirmations
How you construct your affirmations is crucial in how effective they are at convincing your subconscious. The four affirmation musts are:
- Always affirmative, so no negations such as not, no, don’t, etc.
- Always in the first person, I am, I do, etc
- Always in the now, the present tense
- Always involves an action or a positive state
A few examples are; I am on time for meetings, I am at ease speaking to strangers, I stand up for my beliefs, I am full of joy, I am excellent at keeping track of my expenses, I am organized.
Take the list from step 1 and write your affirmations keeping the 4 musts in mind.
Improving Self Esteem Through Self Esteem Affirmations Step 3: Involve Your Feelings
This is possibly the main reason why people fail to make affirmations work for them. You need to feel what you are saying even if you have to fake it. Do not fool yourself, be strict. If you say for instance “I am happy” but while you are saying it you do not muster up a happy feeling you might as well not bother.
So how can you fake it? Well just smile by putting your facial muscles into a smile and think of how you feel when you do feel happy (to stay with the example). Now take that feeling and hold it while you say your affirmation. If you are working with an affirmation of a state or action you have never experienced before than just imagine what it would be like. You know somewhere deep down what it might be like and it will come out in your imagination.

Improving Self Esteem Through Self Esteem Affirmations Step 4: Be Committed
You cannot expect affirmations to work for you is you say them once or twice. For making it work for improving self esteem, affirmations need to be repeated every day. Say them first thing in the morning and again before you go to bed in the evening. The more you say them the better so if you can say your self esteem affirmations several times a day.
You are teaching yourself new thinking habits which turn into beliefs only if you keep at them. You will need to integrate your affirmations into your life and let them take the place of your previous self talk. You can create new affirmations as you need them or when you want to.
By committing for life to saying your affirmations you will find one day that you are full of self esteem and positive uplifting self talk is a common part of your daily life.
