Is overcoming depression really easy? Most will tell you that is not true and you know what, they are right. But as long as you see overcoming depression as difficult you will have a hard time overcoming it. It is amazing how our own perception of something will determine its character.

Or is there maybe, even if only a remote chance that it might be easy?

Decide to love yourself even when you are depressed. Decide to say to yourself ten times “I forgive me”, follow it by saying ten times “I accept me” and then say ten times “I give myself space to be”. Say this to yourself even, in fact especially, if you do not feel like it. You can circulate saying these 3 phrases as long as you like. You will notice that the more you say them the more relief you will start to feel. Remember, you are helping yourself. If you feel you are too depressed to repeat these phrases then know that, that is your choice. When you start to feel relief remind yourself of your power to choose either depression or working on lifting your inner state.

When you are not depressed collect some simple natural things that you know bring you joy. For example a beautiful plant, a loving pet, a picture of a cute puppy, a photo of a beautiful natural scene, a picture of a smiling baby or your child, anything that causes love to bubble up in your heart. Now once you have said your 3 phrases over and over again and you start to feel relief focus on the thing or things that you have chosen. Just gaze at it without trying to feel better but while observing the thoughts that come and go. Let your thoughts be the clouds and your observing the blue sky. When you notice you got caught up in a thought just as soon as you notice start repeating the phrases from step 1.

Continue gazing at your love inspiring things and smile. Initially it may be that you will just be pulling your facial muscles into the shape of a smile, that is a good start. You will notice though that your body responds to smiling facial muscles and you will actually truly start smiling. Now remind yourself that you have a choice, you can choose to be a victim of your depression or you can choose to overcome your depression by deciding to put your focus on that which brings you joy.
Repeat step 1 to 3 as often and as much as needed. By doing this you will be helping yourself and by deciding to do these 3 steps regularly you will come to see that you do not need to be depressed at all. Being depressed is not helping anything so you may as well work on overcoming it.
